Club Update 3/5/12

Hi Everyone

Well done to everyone who turned up on Sunday despite the awful weather!  And for those of you who stayed in bed, I can’t really blame you!

Bank Holiday Paddling

For everyone going to Croyde – I hope there is some great surf!  And for everyone else there is no recreational session this weekend due to the Bank Holiday.

The Sharks Marafun Summer Series

The next race in the Sharks Marafun Summer Series at Harefield, takes place on Tuesday 8th May starting at 7pm. There are three distances to choose from; for the beginners: 1.5 miles (no portages), intermediate 3.5miles (two portages), and for the more experienced paddler: 6.4miles (5 portages) – all distances start and finish at the Coy Carp pub, and only just costs £2 per person.  If you need to borrow a boat (free of charge) then please let me know so I can try to find someone to open up the containers. For more information please visit: www.thesharks.org.uk/Marafun

One Star Course

If you are interested in some more formal coaching, we are running this coaching course over two Sundays: 17th and 24thJune.  The One Star award demonstrates that an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills.  More information about the syllabus etc can be found through

http://www.bcu.org.uk/tests-and-awards/personal-performance-awards/paddlesport-start-i-1-to-3-star/

The cost of the course is £25 for members, places are limited so first come first served.  Please let me know if you are interested or have any questions.

White Water Safety and Rescue

The WWS&R training course is designed for all paddlers operating in a moderate to advanced white water environment in either kayak or canoe. The objective is to provide the underpinning knowledge and teach simple and safe practical skills that can be applied appropriately. By it’s nature the course is very ‘hands on’ and should not usually contain much classroom work.  Participants must be confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water and a minimum of 16 years of age.

The course and be ran in a variety of locations in the UK and takes place over a weekend.  Please let me know if you’re interested so we can look into arranging dates etc.  The cost is usually around £140per person, but if we can get enough participants then the price comes down as low as £80 per person.

And finally…

Ricky Canal Festival 19th and 20th May

As in previous years we’ll be promoting the club and running come try it sessions over both days.  If you’re able to help out then let me know.

Have a great bank holiday weekend and hope to see you in a couple of weeks!
