Upcoming Events and Courses

Hi All

The second half of the year promises to be quite busy with a number of trips and courses in the pipeline. The following are some of the “bigger” items in the calendar, but are by no means the only activities going on. We have many active members paddling throughout the year, so if anyone wants to get more involved or if you do not see a trip that is suitable, please just ask at the club.

Trip specific details i.e. travel arrangements, accommodation etc. will generally be sent out 7-10 days before the event. All events will be in the events section of the Recreational Facebook page.

River Paddling

9/10 August 2014 – Dee / Tryweryn Trip
Trip to the Dee (Saturday) and the Tryweryn (Sunday) with Nick. The trip is aimed at the paddlers who have done some white water and are happy(ish) on the legacy course. We will be staying in Bala Backpackers, cost of accommodation is about £20. If you need equipment please speak to Mike or Arthur at the club sessions.

30/31 August 2014 – Symonds Yat Trip
Introduction to white water and river journey which will count towards BCU qualifications. Saturday morning will be a longer 3-4 hour paddle on the beautiful river Wye. Later in the afternoon and Sunday morning will be an introduction to moving water on the rapids. For those who are interested in getting on to moving water, this trip is essential.

The club will be camping close to the river, but members are free to arrange their own accommodation (B&Bs, hotels etc.) if they prefer.

Open to anyone who can paddle 2-3 hours and who is interested in progressing onto moving water.

If anyone is looking to purchase any equipment, please speak to myself or Joey who is now working at Symond Yat; you will probably not get a better price.

27 September 2014 – FSRT Foundation Safety & Rescue
We are running two one day FSRT courses which cover the fundamentals of safety and rescue for all paddlers. These courses are filling up fast, so please book on Facebook or let me know if you do not have access. The FSRT is pre-requisite to many BCU leadership / coaching awards and “jolly good fun”! The cost of the course is £60 including BCU certification.

The couse will be run by Darren Joy of Fluid Skills and is open to all keen paddlers; you will need some basic equiement e.g. sling and throwline, but we can provide these given some notice. You WILL GET WET!

28 September 2014 – FSRT Foundation Safety & Rescue
Second one day FSRT

17/18/19 October – River Dart Trip
This is one of the classic rivers in the UK and I am embarrassed to say I have never paddled it! Nick is running this trip which is aimed at the paddlers who have done Symonds Yat a couple of times. It is a winter trip and those who go must have the right kit.

Other Stuff
The club regularly paddle the Lee Valley which is a grade 2/3 white water course; I can sign 4 people on for coaching as can Nick. For those with a few Symonds Yat / Nene or similar trips under their belt, this may be the next step.

We are investigating the possibility of a 3 star surf kayak course later in the year, this will be in Devon and approximate course cost will be £66 for 2 days (this will include a surf boat).

Please volunteer for the various work parties; these are essential for us to get the club moved up to the new location!

Hope to see everyone on the water soon!
Arthur
